In EoE, Shinji succeeded in saving the world because he finally realized through Yui/Rei/Lillith that he would rather feel pain than to live in a world that doesn't recognize the pushing and pulling interactions between people and one where no one is a special individual, even though Shinji is relatively unnoticed, except by special bonds built between Misato, the Rei he knew, and Asuka (even though at least we know in NGE that she reflects Shinji's fear of acknowledging their "emotions" toward one another, to try and not aggravate anti-shipposters.) Shinji is absolutely normal as a Lillin human bean, and wants to live and also love and be loved as one. Third Impacts actually ha she the absolute effect of removing interaction, now that I think about it.
