In ancient Greece, whenever the author found they'd written themselves into a corner, one of the Gods would drop from Olympus to straighten out all the loose ends and wind up the play. You knew it was a God because they made their entrance from the rafters. A backstage crane would lower the actor on a cable. Hence the term.
