I used danbooru (admitedly being a reposting site, but I believe it's appropriate to notice tags anyway), and the "original" tag there tends to refer to works that are original by the artists (not official art etc), and not original characters.
For the record, both k-on and hirasawa_yui were tagged, and so was the artist, just to make sure.
As for the translation, I went for the most direct route, yes, but your interpretation seems like a bit of a stretch, especially, like I said, given the setting - with a Yui figure and Giita.
