on Anno though, it's better to look at how the characters get portrayed. The new Rei is explicitly made to be weaker than NGE Rei, and even in the new setting Rei has nothing new or cool to bring to the table. Rei's role is only to be disappointing.
The only ones affected are.... guess who... us. The rest don't really care and is probably glad to see Rei reduced to rubble in the new series.
