What I do is fill inside the character I want to cut out (A), then make a version where the background is black (B). The background doesn't have to be completely filled like here, it's just to get rid of any white pixels around the edges. It sounds like a hassle, but it's really quick to make B using a magic wand selection once you have A.
Then you can invert the silhouette and use it as a mask for the image, and the edges should come out smooth and black. It's a pretty minor benefit, but I find it easier than manually cleaning the background a lot of the time.
