She might have a fragile look, or even image, but it's deceptive because Rei is rock solid despite that. Because she is often passive except for the things she cares for or when action is needed, she might look vulnerable.
I always felt that Rei was very much yearning for a near-unattainable freedom, something others take so much for granted that they have or at the very least believe that they have.
Even some freedom or escape in death.
The only place where Rei's freedom is expressed is in her thoughts, that freedom to explore concepts and ideas in the mind, so Rei's monologue is extremely important to me.
There is also Rei's expression of will through her actions which are also extremely important for the character.
