History's greatest aces were blessed with unusually sharp eyesight, a trait my own damaged eyes sorely lack.
Both Hartmann and Sakai were praised for their exceptional vision. Fighter aces in general had precise eyes, and the best aces were able to literally see their opponent before their foe could see them.
Hartmann has a few stories about training his eyes to guard against "combat blindness" and to perceive enemy aircraft in the distant sky. His perception at range was unreal. As another example, Sakai trained his eyes by pointing out specific faint stars in the sky.
