Which is practiced in many religions. Also Rei's schoolgirl organism functions weren't completely explained. She probably ate what was given to Her while She grew up. Also when Gendo invited Rei to eat while She was resting in the tube. The question still stands. What is "getting something to eat". In EoE Rei "consumed" Gendo's right arm. To regrow Her missing limb. I'm guessing She was able to do that any time She wanted. Maybe up until that point when she finally "consumed meat" Rei was running away from Her fate. Doing the opposite of Her nature. Because Her human side possibly disliked Her real nature. Maybe the "human" side of Rei wanted to live like a normal schoolgirl. Somewhat similar to to "The Last Temptation".
