Essentially I think ReiShin is cute and sweet if you smooth over issues with Shinji not deserving Rei or maybe even loving her at all, but it may make Rei happy, or at least a part of her. Also, Rei did not end as a puppet of Gendo. Maybe she was created as a tool, at least her in her Rei form was, but the spirit that is Rei ultimately asserted herself against Gendo, and that is what matters. Shinji just, as always, fucked up.
