Perrine's archetype is Pierre Clostermann, a French ace who served in the Alsace Squadron of the Free French Air Forces under the RAF. He is credited with 33 kills, making him the top French ace. Clostermann survived the war, wrote many books, and eventually served in French parliament.
His memoirs were published in a book, "The Big Show," that remains in print today and makes for good reading. His book "Flames in the Sky" is a more ambitious general overview of the air war.
