I think Rei is actually a pretty sharp individual just with not much life experience, she figured what was going on with Toji for example.
About her musical taste, I'd agree, it'd be mostly instrumental (maybe classical? someone must listen to all that music from eva) but I don't know about excluding lyrics, she does like words and seems to have a poetically inclined personality at times.
