I think he was kinda fucked either way because had he not died in the sync test he probably would've been done in by the time they confronted Armisael and perhaps it would've been him who self destructed and not Rei II.
I have to wonder because Bardiel was definitely not planned by Gendo nor SEELE and was a legitimate wrench in the gears for their plans. So what was the plan going to be for unit 03 had Bardiel not manifested itself?
