theres a lot of ways you can interperet the rebuilds (and the swries as a whole) and none of them will ever be "the correct answer" but this is how i see it and it seems the least incorrect. shinji having this delusion about mechas and aliens seems to fit in with the director's reasons for making evangelion in the first place.
