For one, Asuka has since her introduction in the Rebuilds been rewritten into a stronger version of the original, with more merits, agency and competency. Being "just a goon from Euro NERV" is, in comparison with NGE, an objective upgrade in her position in the setting. Friendly reminder that Asuka was (and still is for all intents and purposes), a literal discardable puppet in the original.
As for Rei, she has gotten the short end of the stick for 20+ years. Ever since EoE ended and Anno got free reign to do as he pleased, it's been downhill.
3.0 is sharply anti-Rei in terms of narrative, and Rei III is not present in the movie nor is Rei 2.0.
