Shinji brings books to Rei Q. What does she do with them? Nothing. Rei Q sees the music player. If you are really thinking as Q would the player wouldn't mean anything because no one told her it meant anything. But that's not what happened!
(And I'll save everyone the trouble of saying we didn't see her actually pick it up. If the music player wasn't a plot point they wouldn't have animated it in the first place.)
