>>4086156It sounds like from interviews that Anno would arbitrarily rewrite major parts of the script on a whim. So I strongly suspect that the movie feels so uneven because it’s unevenly written. For example, the last minute backstory montage is truly odd. Even if you liked the film, and assume Asuka’s story has a happy end, it’s so strange to lay out all her character drama in a one minute scene only to resolve the drama they JUST introduced within the same one minute sequence. It’s borderline absurdist. In that particular case, I feel like it’s a left over scene from a previous version of the script. But they kept it in because if they removed it, Asuka would hardly have an arc at all.
