I agree s1 had more of focus on music. But it also skipped time too much 7-8 episodes in and we already reached the end of the school year 1? Granted it was only 12 episodes long. And they needed to include azunyan.
I also agree some episodes in s2 was them doing non band activities.
But all in all imo I wouldn't call it a slog. I can understand your point.
