>>2170483I think it's worth noting that even if Rei said that she wanted to die, she had her doubts about it! In ep 25 I think, we get the fantastic part on Rei saying she once prayed for the day Gendo would abandon her, but then she runs through her experience and says that NOW she was afraid.
Rei is a very sad little girl obviously, but even Rei has fears by the end, only they're suppressed by a sense of duty and dare I say it, self-righteousness.
Rei is a juxtaposition of needs and wants, like Rei thinks she doesn't need friends or happiness generally, because that's not the future she sees for herself. But she wants bonds and all that anyway, she can't help it. Stoicism to it's extreme.
Rei isn't as simple as wanting to give only and never take. Even if that's what she does.
>>2170486You're taking too much from too little. No point in accusing him of all that. I think his point is that a truer image of Rei, is the girl that doesn't smile for the sake of smiling. Without a scenario, Rei wouldn't smile. Smiling for herself, no, smiling for others.... yes.
I think Rei can use her beautiful self and grow into something more beautiful, with time, experience and so on. She could become not only intelligent, but wise in interpersonal relationships as well. She could smile for the sake of smiling.
