Imagine there being a huge door somewhere, sealing the answer to all the worlds troubles. No one who's tried so far, can get inside it. Neither could you, if you tried the handle.
Yet, the door would open for you if you merely touched it at the right spot, as it's genetically coded to answer to you, and you only. But you don't know how or where to touch it, so it remains closed. Nor could you imagine having to do such a thing to open it.
As long as you can't imagine it happening, or know how to do it, it's not going to happen. Once Rei realizes she's more than she thinks, and understands it, a whole new world of possibilities unlock for her.
One of the great, hopeful aspects of Rei's character.
