It sounds like you are projecting a lot of stuff onto Rei that isn't really like her at all, not that there's a problem with that, but this all boils down to that I like Rei's canonical appearance; not that poorly drawn thing that is for whatever reason bringing out so many feelings in you, even though it's only tangentially (at best) Rei.
