I see a parallel between this and the show depicts an awakening the physical world begins to experience as the lines between the wired and the real world begin to blur. However, I'm struck by the line Lain says to herself in that last episode, when she says the Wired indeed isn't a higher level of the world, it is only a means of communication. What is Lain then? Where does she really exist? I guess that's the biggest question of the show. I've got no idea, but the show seems to say that Lain exists in our memories, the viewers of the show. That's her form. I don't think it's just a friendly send-off that the last scene of the show is Lain speaking directly to us.
