>so far 3 miles always leaves me in bad shapeHow much can you consistently do right now? If progress (whether for its own sake or for a different long term goal) means a lot to you, it's probably best to treat it the same way you would lifting at the gym: push yourself just that little bit harder each session. If at any point your current intensity is too much for you, scale down in the next session and try again. Figure out what works best for you and work from there, and you'll get to your goal in no time!
>but I was very sad to be going to an event that so many were enjoying just to stand by the wall and smile and nod and not really engage anyoneKnow the feeling all too well, sadly. I've always had a hard time connecting with or caring much about people in general (which I'm about to seek therapy for, on top of taking medication for other issues), so while I'm always polite and responsive if others engage me, it's never in a meaningful way and I certainly cannot get myself to be the one to engage others either. It's not much better online, but at least here I can pick and choose which environments to be in, like this one. Makes the odds of me finding social engagements meaningful just that little bit better.
Have you tried checking out social groups that pertain to any of your interests? Often works really well with things like board games if expanding your comfort zone little by little is your goal.
