My point was that spelling it with one "k" means the vowel BEFORE it is hard, but having two "k"s makes the vowel BEFORE it soft. That is how the English system works.

Because of the double consonants they are soft vowels. It isn't "Lay-der" or "Boo-ter" so spelling her name with two "k"s leads to the pronunciation of "Yu-ko" with a "u" sound like in "up".
