I think it's because there isn't an influx of new people as big as it was years ago. And I mean, when the industry right now pumps tons of series by the season, why bother watching a good series with almost zero discussion going on currently when you could go for any of the seasonal things with tons of discussion?
Not to say that way of thinking is right or wrong, but I feel that it's becoming more of a social activity lately, old series without conclusive endings are hit the hardest with that mentality, so unless we get a reboot or something (like they're trying to do in moonland with the re-labeling to a real novel, maybe, who knows) it'll end up a cult classic with some luck.
And I couldn't agree harder with the boorus' part, no one bothers searching for anything, nowadays the artist comes before the fanart.
