Rei Q is part of a series named the Ayanami-series, and Rei is too. But they're clones. Two different people that like other people, exist independently of each other.
Rei currently presides inside EVA01, and Rei Q is outside walking. As characters, that makes them different. There aren't any connecting points when it comes to them as characters.
I absolutely hate that this happened with Rei, because this is such a weak point with the character in the sense that it's like a kick in the nuts. To have the girl whose arc and character heaves for freedom, individuality and screams to express itself, is so brutally shut down like this narratively and conceptually is nothing but pointless cruelty.
This is not pretending, this is how it is. If you have any qualms with Rei Q not being Rei, you should be writing a letter to Hideaki Anno, not us.
