Unlike Rei, they are present for three films also with emotions tied up for Shinji. I know Rei Q is a thing, but it's not Rei it's just an ugly distortion of Rei. Even the very idea of Shinji says Ayanami changes because Ayanami is not Rei's name any longer, it's also Yui's name.
"Rei", "AyanamI", is relevant to a narrative but not nearly enough as a character. I feel as if they are fighting against Rei with their movie.
