But there's a difference between being "relatable" and "likable" No matter how much someone relates to Shinji, his action near the end are just despicable (unless you would do what he did to a friend of yours in a hospital; I hope you woudln't).
Asuka is indeed the violent individual in the first half, but paradoxically, what we see in the End of Evangelion is that Shinji is the true "abuser". Note that Asuka never crossed the red line of cruelty, but always teased him or "inspired" (in an aggressive way, that's true) him to man up.
But what Shinji did to her later on was just unforgivable; and he did cross a red line. He's just like his father.
