If anything, shwing a version of Asuka actually get over it (with help from Rei and Misato, no less) is the greatest deconstruction of Asukas perception there could be.
The ppl who liked it were actually the new crowd.
In Q, he's trying to
a) Do what he's generally doing in Q: Hammer home horror factors that were present but overlooked in the original because he still needed the setting; Like the danger in out-of-control EVAs, or the horrror in having replaceable artificial soldiers (we never really saw "a" Rei clone in NGE; We saw the )
and b)
Thinking that he even thinks in terms of "favorite girls" is ridiculous. That's how a bad fanfic writer thinks, and why generations of them couldn't come up with ideas as simple as "Rei trying to get the Ikaris t reconcile" or her readily displayed books as a token of individuality.
We've got these fixed, undynamic perceptions of these characters as archetypes more than people. To a writer, they're usually tools.
To tell a story, to make a point, to make certain ideas physical, for self-expression.
It needs to be this way - if you had pity with your chracter, you'd never do anything radical and extreme, you'd just give them a happy sunshine life and there would be nothing unboring to read.
