I assume you mean this scene? I still haven't had the courage to actually start the anime. そういう事情 out of context is the usual Japanese ambiguity, it means "'that' kind of circumstance". But it's actually not ambiguous at all. In this context it can only refer to personal feelings. He prefixes it with まさかとは思うが which more or less translates to an expression of disbelief "out of all things". On top of that, this is Archer speaking, who doesn't mince words. Ergo, I'd say the translation you like is the closer one in this case. There is absolutely no ambiguity for the meaning of this sentence, even if it could come off that way when more directly translated, as done in your first example.
Looks like the more contemptuous ふむ comes out as hm on the other side as well. That's kinda lame. It's the Archer trademark. Even though that's what it is directly translated, it just doesn't feel the same at all. Although I suppose a lot of it comes from the voice actor's delivery.
