I don't really like actually shipping anyone with Asuka, Shinji or Rei (though I have a love for Mari x Asuka, there is really no basis for it - I just think it's cute and the idea of a happy future is nice) because I also agree that the series, while it has elements of romance, isn't really intended to be viewed as a love story. It's more about complex human relationships. Hints of affection are involved at varying levels, but the main point does not seem to be about love, or romantic relations.
Other people completely disagree and that's cool. We don't really need to fight or get passive aggressive.
