Intentional or not--I'd like to believe more intentional than unintentional, but that's just the optimist in me--there are qualities of Rei and her story that resonate with so many people. The tragedy of her existence--the strength with which she endures it is nothing short of admirable. And, despite that strength, it's clear she's still a sad and confused girl, struggling to find meaning to it all. She's a very sympathetic character.
