Rei seemed more like the Anti-Christ rather than the true Messiah for she was female therefore the opposite.
If God exists in the universe Neon Genesis Evangelion exists then Lilith obviously is Satan. If the "Angels" in NGE are God sent then humanity is fighting in the fear against death and ultimately going in the circle of suffering (Endlessly going through the punishment while choosing to live) Instrumentality could be the "Forbidden Fruit" as it is the ultimate knowledge and the power of God by with both Adam and Eve were Tempted that led to their mortality and suffering (punishment)
In NGE the Rebirth is just a redoing of the things that were done and a chance for humans to deny the temptation for knowledge and acceptance of obedience to God. Also another thing taken from Devilman series that are just rebirths of the past, present and future all in one for it all just resets after the rebirth.

How do you feel about it relative to the original manga?It tries to do it's own thing while using the Devil in Devilman as a gateway to include LGBT themes. It has it's own plot with bits and pieces of the original to make it "Devilman". The "Crybaby" was I think overused that didn't seem to play such a big role in the manga. I mean Akira in the manga cried in situations where anyone would cry, but the Crybaby version made the whole plot about it. In the manga it seemed like the crying was part of the plot, but not the whole plot. The art style was a big turn off as it didn't capture the classic style or the brutal nature of the manga with the weird censoring of the demon blood? If you want plot like Devilman than just stay with the manga.
