After my initial post, I did some more reading and it seems that lower urinary volume (along with increased amount of stone constituents, altered urine pH and infection, among other things) is a risk factor.
Another article, focused on water intake, found that urinary volume at onset of kidney stones was decreased compared to the normal, and that prophylactic "hydration training" decreased the risk of recurrence significantly. (Loris et al 1996 [but you need access to read it in full ])
Basically, the idea is that the water dilutes the stone constituents, from what I gathered.
Haven't heard any association between painkillers and kidney stones, but I haven't looked into that specifically.
