We'd first move it to the backyard and hang suet off of it for the birds, then a few weeks/months later, burn the dessicated tree in the fire pit.
Scary how some people leave it in the living rooms for that long, the thing's just tinder waiting to burst into flame. I think Christmas trees are a common cause of house fires.
