On one hand, things like leaving kettenkrad behind, throwing away the rifle and staircase conversation were quite clear signs that the girls journey was over once they reached the top.
On the other hand last words of the manga:
"First of all we eat, then a nap, and after that let's think of something."
Make me think that their journey is not over until they decide so, that next day they may just wake up as usual, eat what they have left and keep going. Where? Does that really matter?
Anyway I think it's probably up to us, readers to decide about the ending of the story or just leave it unknown, and I'm totally fine with that.
Even if they died at the end, I still feel sad but not as much as I would expect muself to feel. That manga kinda learned me to accept it.
God it was such a great story.
