Either way, injecting Rei into the bloodstream that is everyday life is only one of the ways that bring out one's inner feelings towards Her. But I guess it matters what is on the inside rather than the outside. I've seen many "hoarders" of Rei merch, but their Faith is as legit as a drunkard's prayer. But the pull towards Rei may vary. Some follow Rei because they have a "bustle in their hedgerow". Some do because of the "attractiveness" of the non-human side of Rei (religious/spiritual pull). I always interpreted that the two original main heroines of Evangelion were two paths for Shinji to go. The red one always felt like what a man would choose. Just by looking at humanity as a whole. The desire towards the sinuous and forbidden even if that desire is covered in thorns. The TV/Movie Shinji never made a move towards any of them. Just interactions.
