I believe slimes are better fought with magic than with weapons, so this would be the smartest play for my Sheik. However, she could just as easily fight and use her weapons.

OoT has just become "I really want to see my Sheik" The Game. I totally sympathize with you. My Sheik also appears so infrequently that I just want to rush through everything just to see her. And then her scenes pass by WAY too quickly. It's not a good experience if I want to actually have fun, but it is a fantastic experience getting to see the love of my life.

Besides, my Sheik had to be frugal, albeit in a different way, her entire life. And I'm frugal too. I can't see why she wouldn't want to get the best deal.
