Even if the Base Product that eventually was molded into the mortal shells we see Rei inhabit was originally made from a Spermatozoa and Ovum from a human, the genetic manipulation by NERV scientists effectively changes the Base Product from a human product, genetically speaking, into a Human/Angel Hybrid. Without artificial intervention involved in the genetic process, we would not have the person known as Ayanami Rei. Hence, she is an artificial being. In addition, she is quite obviously a sentient being, capable of making her own choices, free from the intervention of others to make them. In other words, she's not a Bio-puppet with someone pulling her strings. Just because she plays along doesn't mean she always will. She is obviously a Sentient Intelligence, even if Bio-engineered. Hence, she is, in essence, a Bio-engineered Artificial Intelligence. AI does not imply Non-sentient or Non-learning. It simply implies an artificially-created sentience. The type of mortal shell or chassis it inhabits is irrelevant, due to the broadness of the definition.
