I loved her since day one, but prior to those two reveals, even I used to believe she had an undeniable sadistic side to her. You don't start seeing the FT arc in a different light until much later. The OVA is great but likely won't compel people who already hate Annie to watch it, and we both know the anime did a poor job at making her likeable to the average viewer.
Yeah, in Trost she is cornered, desperate, and just wants to go home. In contrast to her apparent mercilessness during the expedition, she's visibly distressed over crushed civilians when Eren tossed her into the church. It's the moment when she transitions from intimidating antagonist to troubled teenage girl (literally) driven to the wall.
