>>3266981I'm not sure that Rei blindly obeyed Gendo because she would have already revealed against Gendo when she disobeyed him (the order of withdrawal), and Rei II was already questioning her relationship with Gendo (when she realized that she only said thanks to Shinji and never to Gendo).
If she had survived the explosion her feelings for Shinji would have been greater than those of Rei III in EoE, so I doubt that Rei would have followed Gendo instead of Shinji
