To me a waifu is a female anime character that you feel a strong sense of love towards. Not a measly infatuation that will be dropped come next season or the arrival of a 3D girl. To have a waifu, I believe that you must have a 2D complex and be completely devoted to her. Polygamy of waifus or waifu(s) and 3D is, in my belief, not possible. I don't find it possible to share a love so deep with so many other characters or people. Your waifu is the one that gives you that feeling in your heart when you accept them as your waifu, that gives you a bottomless emptiness in your heart when you realise that you may never be able to embrace her in your arms and warms your heart when you admire her.
It's alright to forget about her when you tend to the real worlds needs, like work. But when you come home, are in your bed or suffering from hardship, you know that she will always be with you and that your unwavering love will always stand strong, regardless of what society says about sharing a different belief of how love operates to theirs.
