Q since literally every single interaction with her in that movie is just someone going "Man I miss the old Rei, this new Rei is fucking useless". And you can see her start getting gaslit by everyone and question who she even is which was real tragic when you consider what happens to her in the final film. Like when Shinji unknowingly says on live coms "why'd we have to bring *that* Rei" and she just kinda frowns and gets sad, or when she sees the Lilith corpse turn into tomato juice and resemble her face and she starts freaking out saying "is that me? Who am I?" are pretty depressing. Versus the TV series where Rei II dies and Rei III is just a soulless husk for the last stretch of episodes until EoE.
