In the first or second draft storyboard for Eva 3.0 this was actually going to be something they did with Misato & Kaji. Misato was going to get infected by some prototype virus of the failures of infinity and she would attempt to seduce Kaji to spread it to him to his dismay at the thought of having to harm the woman he loves the most. You can see a remnant of this in the after credits preview for 3.0 where there's a quick shot of Kaji pointing a USP with a laser and having an expression of distress. Honestly the original draft for 3.0 sounded really cool and I wish Anno had followed thru. I remember The reason he ditched it was because he couldn't stomach the idea of a rebuild without Shinji, which is a shame because he could've easily slipped in parts with Shinji where he's in some illusion world while stuck in unit 01 post N3I.
