I nearly lost the folder I had on the ssd in the last chromebook that I broke, I had to plug it into a tv and mess around with magnets since it wouldn't boot or display on the monitor.
I can't access most of it now though since the usb drive heats up super quick in this jury rigged set up right now so I have to wait for parts to come in still.
