That's one of my gripes with this type of series too, they only tend to bring that stuff out sometimes as a gimmick, most of the rest of the time its just human teenagers doing boring human slice of life shit. Mermaid Melody can be pretty guilty of that too, going entire episodes with just the human/idol stuff, that's not what I watch it for.
I had high hopes that Colorful Pastrale would be better for that but no, even though 11/12 episodes were all mermaid stuff, it was so boring and mundane that it might as well have not been
