It's not about keeping on believing what one wants to think, because like I said it ultimately has to be backed by the work itself.
You talk about communication, but communication goes both ways. Is not about the author dictating from up above. but about bringing something, and an audience reacting to it and responding back.
Plus if only the author's view mattered then every element of the work would be the result of the author's total conscious control, and that's not really the case. most work at it over and over again until something takes shape or work in a hazy rush until it is done.
That's why they often say the work took a life of it's own. because it comes not only from a conscious but also a subconscious place and as such they can't claim complete understanding of their own work.
And finally lasting works are experienced by many and changing audiences and everyone will take from it different things.
