When you use the pen tool to place anchor points you can then use the convert point tool on an anchor point to reveal to beziers. Beziers will enable you to curve the lines. It looks as though you have used them. The gif shows bezier use, the beziers are the lines coming from the anchor points.

Here's a gif I quickly put together showing how to to make shapes using only two anchor points, I've done an eye and each separate path uses two anchor points.
