She needed to pass into the after-world, with Rei and everyone else that did the forced evolution.
My take is that the real tragedy was she was somewhat left behind in her comatose/catatonic state, like it was her warrior's call to be last out.
He realized she needed to die, she asked him/thanked him, she finally got to proceed with the rest of humanity.
I cried like you wouldn't believe when she died, i'm pretty much crying now typing this. It hit deep and tragic.
