People obsessed with shipping obviously have fashioned objects out of characters for their own pleasure. I myself admit that I find some LRS fanart cute, and I certainly like some of the direction pursued by Sadamoto in the manga (I've only read the first two volumes), but I also recognize that a strength of Evangelion on the whole is its commentary on loneliness and despair, supported through the separation experienced by the characters (though not without important moments of connection). This, to me, produces twin effects: on the one hand, validating the feelings of people who have felt isolated and without consolation, but on the other, providing, ironically, incentive for an escapist version of the very series so tied to reflection on escapism.
