Madoka, and by extension Sayaka, had no business being magical girls. It also makes Madoka's sacrifice in the end that much greater. When Homu became the devil, it doesn't really matter. She had nobody and she ended up with nobody. Her saving grace at this point is Madoka doesn't want to go off by herself and be alone.
